There are a large number of different roller blinds and it is not always easy to make the right choice. Philippe Brière, managing director of Silent Gliss, deciphers the subject.

Why choose a roller blind rather than another type of blind?

Roller blinds are more contemporary, their line is more sober than that of boat blinds, or even that of Venetian blinds that are often found in office spaces. More and more, roller blinds are entering private interiors because new fabrics and new materials make them more decorative. They are sometimes associated with a pair of curtains or with a decoration. We find, for example, cotton and linen blends, Screen fabrics filtering the light or blackout fabrics allowing to create complete black in the room.

What are the different roller blinds available on the market?

Spring blinds in permanent tension, like those which existed in our trains. A small cord allows them to be locked in the low position. Price is the main attraction of these more basic blinds. There is, however, a more elaborate version with a system for regulating the spring tension. We can then easily stop the canvas at the desired location or let it go up at a speed that we will have preset. These models are limited in size and in particular the height because you have to be able to access the draw cord. Another possibility is the roller chain blind, which drives the tube and the canvas thanks to a small toothed wheel located at one end of the tube. Easy to maneuver because the endless chain is close at hand, these blinds are the most common. Their operation is reliable and fast. There is a higher version with a system for balancing the weight of the fabric, where an ascent aid brakes the descent for precise and easy handling. The larger the blind, the more force is required to operate it. We therefore choose a blind controlled by a crank or motorized. If the crank is not always very aesthetic, the motor, on the other hand, is inserted in the tube and therefore perfectly invisible. Only the connecting wire is visible. Finally, the king's choice is the electric blind with radio remote control. The technology is integrated into the motor, therefore invisible, and it is from his chair, by means of a simple or multi-channel remote control that one or more blinds can be controlled.

What fabrics are used to make roller blinds?

More or less technical textiles. For the fabric to roll up well, the canvas must be as flat as possible, cut without a hem and perfectly rectangular. The weft of the fabric, depending on its density, more or less filters the light. The Screen - fiberglass wire sheathed in PVC - offers many possibilities of weft and filtration. Some fabrics incorporate aluminized faces for the return of heat to the outside, thus helping to regulate the temperature of the spaces. To obtain a blackout effect, a fabric is used, one side of which is treated by flocking.

What developments are we witnessing in roller blinds?

Today, fabric manufacturers are developing more decorative materials that are compatible with roller blinds in larger widths, which makes it possible to make blinds up to five meters wide and at heights up to twelve meters. The engine is also booming because it is simplifying and prices are becoming more accessible. Design boxes can also hide the winding tube. The supports are more discreet, and for ultimate personalization, it is possible to print a visual on the fabric. All of this contributes to the development of the store in private decoration, but also in the office, hotel and hospital environments. The implementation also becomes simpler. A few screws are enough to install a blind. A successful installation requires a perfectly horizontal installation so that the canvas is wound evenly over the tube. To know more : www.silentgliss.fr
