The ideal would be to clean your roof twice a year. Once in the spring to make sure the winter hasn't caused too much damage. And once in late fall, when all the dead leaves have finished falling, to prepare the roof for winter. Adjust to the weather to avoid climbing on the roof when the wind is blowing hard, or when it is too hot. Do not skimp on your safety: be sure to take all the necessary precautions before embarking on this high-flying mission!

2. How do I get on the roof to clean it?

First step and not least: get on the roof. This mission requires your full attention.

  • Work accompanied for your safety!
  • Equip yourself with good shoes so as not to slip.
  • Use a suitable ladder (between 100 and 160 € depending on the height) and remember to place a wedge at its feet to prevent it from moving. Besides, leave 1 m of margin between the top of the ladder and the bottom of the roof so that you never have to climb the last bars (too dangerous).
  • Equip yourself with a protective harness. You can never be too careful.
  • Once on the roof, remember to attach the ladder to the roof with the safety hooks.

3. Foaming operation on the roof

You will have to start by removing the installed moss and lichen. Although it can erode the tiles, you can help yourself with a high pressure cleaner (Kärcher type) by working from the top of the roof down. Another option, less harmful to the roof: with a hard brush and soapy water, before rinsing, always from top to bottom. advice : to limit the appearance of moss on the roof, remember to prune the surrounding trees and trim the vegetation that climbs along the facades of your house.

4. Thoroughly clean and protect the roof

After the defoaming operation, if the weather is good and there is no wind, spray your roof with anti-foam. To completely protect it from bad weather (frost, rain, snow, etc.), you can also apply a water-repellent treatment that will reduce the porosity of the tiles by making them smooth. Sealing and impermeability at the rendezvous!

Good to know : to be effective, the water-repellent treatment must rest for 24 hours. To make checks, put water on your tiles. If the water slides, it means that the treatment is effective. On the other hand, if the water is absorbed, you will have to start the water repellent treatment again.

5. Clean the gutters

Last step of your major roof cleaning: the gutter. First of all, make sure that your ladder is positioned stably, then remove the largest of the leaves and branches by hand (or using a gardening trowel). For a complete cleaning, you can use a powerful jet of water, while monitoring the evacuations so that the pipes do not become blocked as you go along.
